Walter Mérida

Dr. Walter Mérida is currently the Associate Dean of Research and Industrial Partnerships in the Faculty of Applied Science at UBC Vancouver.  

He began his career working with Ballard Power Systems, British Gas Investments Canada and universities more than 20 years ago. He was a founder and board member for General Hydrogen Corporation, and he co-founded Innovative Breakthrough Energy Technologies, a company-creation platform based in Vancouver.

Dr. Mérida  created the Natural Gas Futures research consortium at UBC and the Transportation Futures Group at the Pacific Institute for Climate Solutions. He serves on the Board of Directors for the Canadian Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association and the Climate Change Advisory Board for Toronto Dominion Insurance.

At UBC, Dr. Mérida has served as director for the Clean Energy Research Centre, Senior Advisor to UBC’s President and Vice-Chancellor, co-Chair of the Climate Emergency Task Force and as a delegate to Conference of the Parties (COP) meetings. He is currently the Associate Dean of Research and Industrial Partnerships in the Faculty of Applied Science.

Dr. Mérida’s work will contribute to the development of solar devices and systems through his research in hydrogen and transportation.
